McIntosh Laboratory hi-fi.

McIntosh numbered almost every model in its own sequence, and the per-model ranges compiled from the production books are the closest thing American hi-fi has to an official table. The letter inside a number is a production-run mark, not a year, which is the mistake most online advice repeats. Sales records stopped when the one employee who kept them retired, so nothing after that can be confirmed by the factory.

The valve era

From the 50W-1 and the A116 through the MC30, MC60, MC75, MC240 and the MC275, each power amplifier carried its own serial sequence, and the ranges are documented model by model. The C-series preamps run in parallel sequences of their own.

1967–1999

The solid-state turn

The MC2100/MC2105 and the later MC2300 lines move to transistors while keeping the same serial discipline; the MA and C ranges follow. The documented per-model windows are what this archive reads.

Watch out
  • A run letter read as a date letter produces a confident, wrong year.
  • Reissue and legacy-series units share model names with the originals but not their value or their numbering.

Frequently asked
Does McIntosh have a serial number lookup?

No public lookup exists, but the per-model ranges are documented (the production history 1949–1999 and Roger Russell's records). The decoder reads them once you name the model.

What do the letters inside a McIntosh serial mean?

Run letters (500D5-style) mark the production batch, not a year — the archive matches a number against the documented run shapes instead of guessing.

Why do two sources give different years for my McIntosh?

McIntosh built in batches from pre-made sub-assemblies, so a serial of one era can sit on a chassis of the next; the archive reports the range rather than correcting either source.
