The three letters on the capacitor

On British equipment the most precise date in the machine is often not on the chassis at all: it is three letters printed on a Hunts capacitor, and it gives a week and a year.

Hunts took the key word WHITSUNDAY — ten letters, none of them repeated — and mapped them onto the digits: W=1, H=2, I=3, T=4, S=5, U=6, N=7, D=8, A=9, Y=0. In the normal order the first two letters are the week of the year and the third letter is the last digit of the year.

A reverse order also occurs, with the year letter first, so both readings have to be tried: YIW is week 03 of 1961, while ITD has to be read as year 3, week 48. Every decoded sample in surviving amplifiers falls between 1961 and 1968, and the alphabet repeats each decade.

That last point is what keeps the code honest: the letters give a week and a year digit, and the century has to come from the amplifier's own era. On a Leak Stereo 20 the answer is unambiguous; on a capacitor found loose in a box, it is not.

The same period left other markings on the parts: Mullard mustard capacitors, TCC codes and the EIA stamps on imported parts. They are read the same way — as witnesses about the part.

How to read it
01 / Find the letters

Three capital letters on the capacitor body, sometimes with a fourth marking that is a batch code rather than a date.

02 / Apply WHITSUNDAY

Week from the first two letters, year digit from the third. If the numbers look wrong, try the reverse order.

03 / Fix the decade

The year digit is 0–9: 1961 is the earliest year these codes are found in surviving equipment.

1950s-1969 (Hunts taken over by Erie in the late 1960s, probably 1969) · 25 rows · confidence Medium · Vox AC50 — Hunts capacitor date codes

Dates the CAPACITOR, not the unit: it gives a terminus post quem. the source notes that nobody knows how long new capacitors sat on stockroom shelves, so an estimate is 'just a guess or surmise'. Only valid if the capacitor is original - a recap destroys the evidence. Legibility: bias and cathode bypass caps usually show the code, the big clamped filter cans often hide it.

Frequently asked
What does a Hunts code like YIW mean?

Read on the WHITSUNDAY alphabet: Y=0 as the year digit and IW as week 19 would be the reverse reading, while the documented reading is week 03 (YI) and year digit 1 — 1961, in an amplifier of that era. Both readings are checked, and the amplifier's own era fixes the decade.

Can I date an amplifier from a capacitor alone?

You can date the capacitor. The amplifier is never older than its newest original part, so the code marks the earliest the unit can be, not the year it was built.
